By combining cut pile, loops, and flat weaving, these rugs feature a three-dimensional effect and an interesting texture. This rug’s remarkable design is inspired by the V&A’s collection of tapa fabric, derived from the bark of the paper mulberry tree, Broussonetia papyrifera, which Pacific Islanders have been producing for millennia. The distinctive patterns, made through a variety of effects such as stamping, painting, stencilling, printing, staining and smoking, were appreciated for their abstraction as much as their symbolic meaning.
